Which solution offers better sound insulation in a partition, paneling or ceiling?
A) Two layers of plasterboard
or
B) One layer of plasterboard and one intermediate layer of soundproof membrane Suprema AD with a weight of 4.2 kg/m2
When we compare soundproofing a partition, or a lining, made with two layers of plasterboard, against a system made with one layer of plasterboard combined with one layer of membrane Suprema AD with mass 4.2 kg/m2, the performance, in terms of sound insulation, will differ significantly.
But let's analyze the two cases separately:
A. Drywall construction only with plasterboard panels (12.5 mm each).
Increased system mass - Adding a second layer of plasterboard to a partition or cladding increases the overall mass of the wall, which is vital for preventing sound transmission.
The more mass that is added, the better the soundproofing properties of the barrier against airborne noise.
Airborne noise reduction (airborne noise) - Two layers of plasterboard are particularly effective in reducing airborne noise (eg voices, 2 people talking, TV sounds, etc.) due to of the total increased density.
Consequently, why should we prefer acoustic membrane lining Suprema AD ?
B. One layer of plasterboard and one layer of Suprema AD soundproofing membrane weighing 4.2 kg/m2 features: em>
High density: The Suprema AD membrane with a weight of 4.2 kg/m2 and a thickness of just 3.5mm is specifically designed to reduce sound by adding significant mass without adding much thickness to our wall.
The Suprema AD membrane is very effective in reducing the sound of a wide frequency range, including sounds at low frequencies, which are more difficult to cut than two simple plasterboards.
This happens for a simple reason.
Sound penetrates much more easily two same materials such as plasterboard because they tune (pulsate) = transmit at the same frequency.
When the sound penetrates two different materials (plasterboard and a membrane Suprema AD) these tune to a different frequency so they don't pulsate as easily to transmit sound to the next building block.
Also our separation with the membrane Suprema AD despite being robust
not only blocks the sound but also gives it an elasticity which also contributes to the difficulty of transmitting the sound wave. If, however, it is compared to a wall made of simple plasterboards which does not have elasticity, the transmission of the sound wave that hits it is transmitted to the next structural element.
Dampening properties: The Suprema AD membrane also helps to damping of vibrations that can be transmitted through the walls.
In conclusion, in order to achieve the maximum possible sound reduction, adding only mass (weight) to our construction (e.g. an additional plasterboard) does not maximize our sound insulation effect.
There are factors such as the placement of membranes between the plasterboard layers, and the cutting of our frame with special shock absorbers (which we will refer to in another article of ours) that give certified and specific soundproofing results as systems now..
Multiple benefits with the integration of Suprema AD :
- Adds less thickness to our wall (- 9mm!!! per layer)
- More effective sound insulation (in a wider frequency range especially at low frequencies)
- It doesn't tune our wall as easily
- Offers additional anti-vibration protection while maintaining part of the flexibility of the construction us, and thus, in addition to the significant reduction of airborne sound, it also contributes to the protection against stereoborne sounds, which are transmitted more easily by stiff or rigid constructions.
- The membrane Suprema AD is self-adhesive does not need any additional mechanical support during its application and thus contributes to the speed of application of our construction but also to the anti-vibration cutting of two rigid materials such as the metal support frame (either placing it between two plasterboard panels).
